Safety in Asana
Tuning-in to get maximum benefit from yoga poses.
When practicing yoga have you ever wondered:
What is a bandha, and why is it important?
Why do I sometimes feel totally blissed-out and sometimes totally wrecked after a yoga class?
What is a gazing point?
Why is breathing important?
Does everyone have to wear tight pants?
Join Sacred Ally’s own, Christian Goldberg to explore the answers and learn more about how to get the most out of your practice.
”Though I don't have all the answers, I can tell you that if your asana (aka "yoga") practice isn't bringing you a sense of curiosity, interest in the process, and deepening into yourself, you are not getting the most out of time spent in practice.” ~Christian Goldberg
Of course everyone has a unique process along the journey, but intrinsic to everyone's asana is the body. Like a musical instrument, the body has a correct way of being tuned, held, played, and heard that helps the practitioner hone in on improvement. As with an instrument, if the body is handled and played incorrectly for long enough it goes out of tune. The player must learn a better method of musicianship to restore its potential harmony.
Join us for Safety in Asana to increase your knowledge, and to engage more fully with that transcendent moment of mind-body connection.
What to expect:
This two-hour workshop endeavors to teach you how to set up the body for a connected practice from the first move.
We will focus on the three basics of asana: breathing, bandha, and gazing point.
Material to be covered: seated breathing practice, experiential exercises to help locate the inner locks, practice with gazing point, and a brief selection of standing & seated asana to practice these skills.
We will make time to explore asana in a flow and time for participants to experiment with their "challenge" poses.
The workshop closes with the basic four "yoga seal" postures, which conclude with shavasana.
The information gained in this workshop can enhance any yoga class when applied consistently.
Please bring:
Bring your yoga mat
A hand towel for sweat
A long strap if you typically need one.
A water bottle - keep that body hydrated!
Blocks, blankets and loaner mats are on-site.
Everyone is encouraged to ask questions that arise throughout the class.
Previous yoga experience is not necessary. Willingness to try new things is a plus.
Meet Christian
Christian Goldberg
Christian has the unique physical background of martial arts, weightlifting, Shiatsu bodywork and it's associated self-care to draw on. Her first exposure to Ashtanga Yoga was during Shiatsu school, in 1998, when her mental and emotional energy was at a state beyond taming. She relearned Primary Series from Annie Pace several years later and in 2018, after a break to prove herself to the competetive weightlifing world, she returned to the discipline with vigor.
With a strong drive to understand the physiology of asana practice, she poured into the study of anatomy & physiology as well as the ancient texts outlining the pedagogy of Yoga. Along with Annie Pace, Christian has continued learning asana and pranayama practices with Ty Landrum, the Richard Freeman/Mary Taylor team, Heidi Chen and Philippa Asher. Though no teacher has answered her burning question of "How, specifically?" she finds constant inspiration in contemporary practitioners and ancient yoga texts alike.
You can connect online with Christian via her FB link.
