SCREAM!
This summer we moved a block away from an Elementary school. My days are filled with the laughter, screeching, screaming and yelling of children at play. This fills my heart and awakens a deep remembering. I am reminded that we are meant to make sounds and noises! Loud ones in fact! We are meant to scream and shout and yell and laugh with no volume limitations. Using our voice in this way is a natural and healthy discharge of energy and emotion. It’s absolutely primal and natural. It’s down right healthy!
At some point however we started being told it’s time to quiet down. Don’t be so loud. Stop your screeching and screaming, your hurting my ears! It’s not appropriate. We are in public….keep it down! Shhhhhhhhh! Sooooo, how’s that going for us? Here is my witness. Since it is no longer appropriate to use our voice in all of it’s volume and variation, we have become very stuck. Energy is no longer able to discharge at the intensity it requires. Emotions are unable to be expressed in full because heaven forbid we disrupt anothers quiet bubble. Hyper-Quietness is a sickness. It creates imbalance and blockages. These end up coming out in relationships with our loved ones. Have you ever found yourself absolutely screaming and going nuts over simple household things? We are so pent up that we will use any opportunity to unleash our wild sounds and generally it’s over dramatized and not pretty. It hardly reflects the true nature of what set it off. I think this might explain road rage a little bit too yeah?
My question is, can we correct this? Can we create more appropriate and even sacred spaces to unleash our voice in all of it’s glory and range of emotional discharge? Yes! We can! These opportunities are rising in communities through song circles, primordial scream circles, hike to the mountain top and howl for your life, drum circles, chanting, ceremony and much, much more. The point is, it’s okay! In fact it’s vital to our vitality and resilience. Find the outlets, create the outlets, wrap your head around bringing our voices back to full capacity.
SCREAM already!
